What is a DGCA Remote Pilot License?
The DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) is the official government-issued license that authorizes a person to fly drones commercially in India. It is issued by DGCA โ the Directorate General of Civil Aviation โ through India's Digital Sky platform.
Under India's Drone Rules 2021, any drone weighing above 250 grams that is operated commercially โ or flown in controlled airspace โ requires the operator to hold a valid RPC. The license is valid for 10 years and is recognized across all Indian states.
Important: The DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate is not just a formality โ it is a legal requirement. Operating a commercial drone without it can result in fines, drone confiscation, and legal action under the Drone Rules 2021.
Who Needs a DGCA Drone License?
You need a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate if you are:
- A commercial drone operator โ aerial photography, videography, events
- An aerial survey pilot โ topographic surveys, construction monitoring, GIS mapping
- An agriculture drone pilot โ crop spraying, precision agriculture
- A drone inspector โ infrastructure, power lines, industrial inspections
- Any professional flying a drone weighing above 250g in controlled airspace
You do NOT need a license if you are a hobbyist flying a nano drone (under 250g) within visual line of sight in uncontrolled (green) airspace, and not for commercial purposes.
Step-by-Step Process to Get Your DGCA Drone License
Here is the complete process as of 2025, in the correct sequence:
Register on DGCA Digital Sky Platform
Create your account at digitalsky.dgca.gov.in. This is India's official drone regulatory portal where all drone registrations, licenses, and flight permissions are managed. You will need your Aadhaar number and a valid mobile number for OTP verification.
Choose a DGCA-Approved RPTO
Select a DGCA-authorized Remote Pilot Training Organisation (RPTO) for your training. Only an RPTO can legally prepare you for and administer the official DGCA exam and skill test. DroneAcad is a DGCA-approved RPTO with authorization number RPTO202500079, based in Ernakulam, Kerala. See our RPTO training course for details.
Complete Theory Training
Your RPTO will conduct classroom and online theory sessions covering: DGCA drone regulations and Drone Rules 2021, Indian airspace structure (red/yellow/green zones), meteorology and weather effects on drone flight, drone anatomy and systems, and pre-flight checklists and safety protocols.
Complete Practical Flying Hours
You must log a minimum number of practical flying hours at your RPTO's certified flying field, as per the DGCA syllabus. This includes take-off and landing procedures, hover tests, figure-8 patterns, emergency protocols, and payload operations (if applicable).
Pass the DGCA Written Exam on Digital Sky
The DGCA theory exam is conducted online through the Digital Sky portal. Your RPTO will schedule and supervise this exam. It tests your knowledge of regulations, airspace, safety, and drone operations. A passing score is required to proceed.
Practical Skill Test by RPTO Examiner
A DGCA-authorized examiner at your RPTO will evaluate your practical flying skills. This includes a preflight check, actual flight maneuvers, and an emergency response demonstration. Passing this test is the final step before your license is issued.
Receive Your Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC)
Once you clear both the written exam and practical skill test, your RPTO submits your results to DGCA. Your Remote Pilot Certificate is then issued through the Digital Sky platform โ valid for 10 years from the date of issue.
Documents Required for DGCA Drone License
You must have all of the following documents ready before beginning your RPTO training:
Critical: A valid passport is mandatory โ it is not optional. Many candidates delay their enrollment because they do not have a current passport. Apply for your passport in advance if you do not already have one.
How Long Does It Take to Get a DGCA Drone License?
With a DGCA-approved RPTO like DroneAcad, the entire training, examination, and skill test process takes as little as 5 days. This includes:
- Days 1โ2: Theory training (regulations, airspace, meteorology, drone systems)
- Days 3โ4: Practical flying training at the certified flying field
- Day 5: DGCA written exam + Practical skill test
After successful completion, DGCA processes and issues the RPC digitally within a few working days.
How Much Does a DGCA Drone License Cost?
The cost of getting a DGCA drone license in India includes RPTO training fees and DGCA exam fees. At DroneAcad, the DGCA RPTO training is offered as a standalone 5-day program with license fees included โ contact us for current pricing. The DGCA exam fee itself is a nominal government fee processed through Digital Sky.
Beware of very cheap "drone certificates" from non-RPTO institutes โ these are not recognized by DGCA and do not allow legal commercial operation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing a non-RPTO course: If your training provider is not listed on DGCA's Digital Sky portal as an approved RPTO, the certificate they issue has no legal value for commercial operations.
- Wrong drone category: Make sure your training matches the drone category you intend to operate (small vs medium vs large). Training on the wrong category may mean you cannot legally fly your drone.
- Missing medical certificate: Many candidates forget that the medical fitness certificate from an RMO is mandatory. Your RPTO will guide you through this, but arrange it before your training starts.
- No valid passport: Applications stall because candidates do not have a current passport. This is the most common delay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. For commercial drone operations and for flying drones above 250g in controlled airspace, a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) is legally mandatory under India's Drone Rules 2021. Hobbyists flying nano drones (under 250g) in uncontrolled airspace are exempt.
The DGCA written exam is conducted online through the Digital Sky platform. However, the practical flying training and skill test must be done in-person at a DGCA-approved RPTO facility. So the process is partly online, but the practical component requires physical attendance.
The DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) is valid for 10 years from the date of issue. After 10 years, renewal is required through the Digital Sky platform.
RPTO stands for Remote Pilot Training Organisation โ a drone training institute officially authorized by DGCA. Only an RPTO can train candidates for and administer the official DGCA exam and skill test, and only an RPTO can facilitate the issuance of the Remote Pilot Certificate. Training at a non-RPTO institute will not give you a government-recognized license. Read more in our guide: DGCA RPTO vs Non-RPTO โ Key Differences.
The Indian DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate is recognized primarily in India. For commercial drone flying abroad โ particularly in the Middle East โ your DGCA license is generally accepted as proof of professional training, but you may also need to comply with that country's local civil aviation authority requirements. For Europe and North America, additional certifications may be required.
